RUGS - How to choose the right one for your home

Rugs are used for a variety of reasons ranging from functional to aesthetic. Ever useful, they do provide physical warmth for a wood or tile floor, as well as protect the floors from the abuse of chair legs and stiletto heels.
Visually, their application is even wider ranging. Rugs can create a smaller environment within a larger space, creating intimacy, so you can use them anywhere. So, if you have a great room layout, a rug under the main gathering areas can add the warmth that type of floor plan can often lack. A rug in an entry can make a smaller size space look larger, and can have the same effect on a bathroom. In a kitchen, a rug can visually break up a sea of wood and granite, as well as provide cushion for the chef in the family. In the main areas such as a dining room, living room, or family room, a rug can create ambiance as well as define the style and formality of the room. In a bedroom, a rug placed under the main bed creates a wonderful backdrop for the rest of the items in the room.
Regarding the size of the rug, bigger is better because it creates a larger visual feel in the space, but at minimum needs to be able to have all of the front legs of the furniture pieces on the rug. In a dining room, the goal is to have 3’ from the edge of the table to the rug, so your guests don’t pull the chair off the edge of the rug when they sit down.
Many homeowners make the mistake of having multiple rugs of the same pattern. It’s far better to go for coordinating rugs or rugs that work together rather than having the same pattern repeated over and over. The goal is that every rug should look handmade and a one-of-a-kind, even if it is machine made.
You can use a rug on top of carpeting to create texture against the plain fabrics or leather that are so popular today, or to create seasonality in a space, or to alter your color scheme periodically. Rug pads are now available for on top of carpeting, wood, or tile floors, and are necessary for safety, as well as preserving the life of your rugs and floors.
